What to Expect During Solar Installation

Going solar is an exciting step! Here’s a breakdown of what you can typically expect during the installation process:

  • Pre-Installation Site Survey: Before installation begins, a technician will visit your home to assess your roof’s condition, orientation, and shading. They’ll also check your electrical panel and discuss the optimal placement of your system.
  • Permitting and Paperwork: Your solar installer will handle the necessary permits and paperwork required by your local authorities and utility company. This process can vary in length depending on your location.
  • Equipment Delivery: Once permits are approved, your solar panels, inverter, and other necessary equipment will be delivered to your home.
  • Mounting System Installation: The installation crew will begin by installing the mounting system on your roof. This typically involves attaching rails or brackets to your roof structure.
  • Panel Installation: The solar panels will then be attached to the mounting system.
  • Electrical Wiring: Electricians will connect the panels to the inverter, which converts the DC electricity generated by the panels into AC electricity that can be used by your home. They will also connect the inverter to your electrical panel.
  • Inspection: Once the installation is complete, a local inspector will verify that the system meets all safety and code requirements.
  • Utility Connection: Finally, your utility company will connect your solar system to the grid. This usually involves installing a new meter that measures both the electricity you use and the excess electricity your system sends back to the grid (net metering).
  • System Activation and Monitoring: Once connected, your system will be activated, and you’ll be able to start generating your own clean energy. Your installer will show you how to monitor your system’s performance.

The entire installation process typically takes a few days, depending on the size and complexity of your system. Throughout the process, your installer should keep you informed of the progress and answer any questions you may have.
